UNDER THE TENT - FEATURED SPEAKERS:
11:00 NATIVE
AMERICAN FRUITS with author Dr. LEE REICH
Although most supermarket fruits reflect
our European heritage, a number of native fruits -- including
pawpaw, persimmon, lowbush blueberry, juneberry, elderberry,
and more -- were enjoyed by Native Americans and early
settlers. They also received a flurry of interest in the latter
half of the 19th century, when new and better varieties of
wildings were sought out. This slide presentation will
re-introduce many of these natives, describe their histories,
appearances, and flavors, as well as how to plant and grow them
today. Because they are native, these fruits generally look
naturally at home in our landscapes, and are pest-free and easy
to grow. Samples of fruit will be available.
12:30 TREES:
For Beauty, Shade, and Future Generations
with Dr. Francis Groeters of Catskill
Native Nursery
Picking the perfect tree for your
landscape can be challenging. Trees are an investment in the
future as they will likely outlive the gardener and be around
for the next generation to enjoy. This illustrated talk will
introduce you to many tree options and perhaps some new
varieties you hadn’t considered.
