Sassafras, Sassafras albidum, has leaves with interesting shapes and spectacular fall color. It generally grows as a small tree in the Catskills but occasionally reaches a large size. Along with Spicebush, Lindera benzoin, it also is a host plant for the Spicebush Swallowtail butterfly.
