Want to know more about the different types of native bees and how to conserve them? The Xerces Society is dedicated to the conservation of invertebrates with an emphasis on bees, butterflies and other insects. In December 2009 they added the Pollinator Conservation Resource Center where you can find regional information about plant lists (including a concise 2-page publication, Northeast Plants for Native Bees), habitat conservation guides, and more. Another organization dedicated to conservation of pollinators (mostly bees of course, but including all pollinators) is The Pollinator Partnership - their most important program is the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign. They also have a publication entitled Selecting Plants for Pollinators. The Natural Resources Conservation Service of the United States Department of Agriculture has a detailed publication on native pollinators entitled Pollinator Biology and Habitat - directed at farmers in New England and somewhat technical but with a plant list that can be useful for homeowners in New York as well. The National Sustainable Agriculture Information Service has information on native bees as well as a detailed publication Alternative Pollinators: Native Bees. Finally, Michigan State University has a publication entitled Conserving Native Bees (2.2 MB pdf file).
