Goldenseal
Hydrastis canadensis
A valued medicinal plant that has become rare in
the wild due to overcollection. Inconspicuous white flowers give rise
to bright red raspberry-like fruits that sit nestled amid the
maple-shaped leaves. Rhizome and roots are golden in color, hence the
common name. Slowly spreads to form an attractive, bold-textured ground
cover for the woodland garden. Companions: False Goat’s Beard,
Hepatica, Spring Beauty, Ginseng, Crested Iris, and Ferns.
