Wood Anemone

Anemone quinquefolia

We’ll forgive you if you’re not familiar with this diminutive spring ephemeral. It disappears quickly after flowering and is in flower for only a brief time. So why plant it? In rich woodland habitats it forms extensive colonies that can be quite showy. The white flowers are sometimes pinkish in bud. Interplant with ferns or other more persistent woodland wildflowers and you will be rewarded with a reliable, albeit fleeting, sign of spring.
