BUTTERFLIES THROUGH BINOCULARS
Saturday, July 1st FREE WORKSHOPS:

BUTTERFLY IDENTIFICATION & COUNT
12:30 - 4:30 (informal instruction and independent count)
Every year the North American Butterfly Association sponsors a nation-wide Butterfly Count on or about the 4th of July. Come to the nursery and participate by helping us look for, identify and count butterflies. Spend a half hour or half the day. Conservation-minded butterfly enthusiasts no longer net butterflies and pin them in order to identify them, but use spotting scopes, binoculars and digital cameras to look for distinguishing field marks. We’ll have optical equipment and the newest field guides available that will help you learn how to identify “Butterflies through Binoculars."

10:30 - 11:30 Attracting and Identifying Butterflies of the Catskills with Francis Groeters, PhD.
Francis will teach you about the common butterflies of the Catskills, how to attract them with their favorite nectar plants, and how to provide food for their caterpillars by
landscaping with the host plants they depend on.
This is a great workshop for beginners and butterfly pros.

1:30 - 2:30 The Spirit of Butterflies: Myth,  Magic and Art with Maraleen Manos-Jones
Maraleen will talk about the importance of inviting butterflies into your gardens and your hearts. She has been involved with butterflies for over 30 years and has created butterfly gardens wherever she has lived. She’ll share butterfly poetry, myths, inspirational stories, and practical garden tips. She’ll share up-to-date information about monarch butterflies, their unique migration, and efforts to save their habitats in Mexico through reforestation. Learn how to certify your garden as a Monarch Waystation
and a Wildlife Backyard Habitat.
She is the author of the book The Spirit of Butterflies: Myth, Magic and Art.
Her book as well as her unique mosaic butterfly shelters and hand-woven pine
needle art from the women in the mountains of Mexico will be for sale.
